What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of holistic bodywork, using acupressure and other techniques (see below). It is generally very deeply relaxing and is used to treat a wide range of health conditions - both physical and emotional. It's great for any stress-related issues and for preventative health care. Increasingly developments in Western science are able to explain how Shiatsu works at a structural and cellular level.
With its origins in Japan and in Traditional Chinese medicine, Shiatsu is now a popular therapy, increasingly recognised and regulated in the majority of countries worldwide. Its professional association in this country is the Shiatsu Society UK.

What to expect from a treatment
You remain fully clothed as your practitioner treats you - lying on a comfortable padded mat or massage table. You will be covered by a sheet or blanket for warmth, and then enjoy the deep but comfortable pressure that is the special feature of Shiatsu treatment. When receiving Shiatsu you will experience a range of techniques featuring supportive, comfortable pressure from the relaxed body weight of your practitioner. This is applied principally with the thumbs and hands, with acupressure, and treatment may also include gentle stretches and rotations. Many clients choose - after an initial series of sessions to address specific symptoms - to carry on receiving regular treatments, typically once a month, as part of their positive approach to maintaining their health. |
